UNAA Calls For Stronger Support for Achieving Sustainable Development Goals in Nigeria

The United Nations Association of Africa (UNAA) has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to supporting Nigeria in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in the areas of sustainable economic growth and employment creation.

In a statement signed by its President General, Amb. Sylvester Okafor, the association acknowledged that in a populous and diverse nation like Nigeria, eradicating poverty and promoting inclusive economic growth are critical priorities. The statement emphasized that the United Nations has a vital role to play in helping Nigeria leverage its abundant natural resources and vast human capital to realize these goals.

Amb. Okafor highlighted several key areas where effective collaboration between the UN and the Nigerian government can drive meaningful progress. These include:

  • Capacity Building: Delivering training programs and resources to empower local communities and small businesses, thereby fostering entrepreneurship and job creation.
  • Infrastructure Investment: Encouraging development in essential sectors such as transportation, energy, and technology, which are foundational to sustainable economic growth.
  • Sustainable Agriculture: Supporting initiatives that enhance food security, boost agricultural productivity, and build resilience to climate change.

The statement also underscored the importance of Youth Empowerment, advocating for programs that equip young people with skills aligned with labor market demands, including vocational training and education.

Amb. Okafor concluded by urging all stakeholders to strengthen collaborative efforts that will help Nigeria fulfill its SDG commitments. “Together, we can address economic disparities and build a sustainable future for all Nigerians,” he affirmed.
